In order to be who you are, you must be willing to let go of who you think you are.
Michael Singer ~ The Untethered Soul

This Turmeric Tea is a blend of green tea, turmeric root, ginger root  fennel seeds, coriander seeds, cumin seeds,  and lemon juice. It’s intended to be sipped throughout the day – assisting the body and organs to flush out toxins while revving up the metabolism.

It was inspired by an Ayurvedic detox tea in Dr. Suhas Kshirsagar’s book called The Hot Belly Diet – A 30-day plan to reset your metabolism and restore your body’s natural balance to heal itself.

If you are going caffeine-free, you can use an herbal tea (like tulsi, chamomile, mint or ginger) instead of green tea. Sometimes I will use yerba matte, white tea or black tea instead of green tea, and other whole spices ( like a cinnamon stick, whole clove, cardamom) just to mix it up a bit.

Please use this and adapt it to your taste.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda originates from India, over 3000 years ago, and is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems, based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Its primary function is to restore or maintain balance within the body, not fight disease.

For more information on what Ayurveda is, and the Ayurvedic diet and practices,  visit this and this.  I’ve found these two articles very helpful!

I wholeheartedly believe in the healing power of plants, and how wonderfully they can assist our bodies in healing themselves. Healing foods don’t have to be flavorless and boring, they can be vibrant and delicious, too.

Part of the Clean Eating Guide is this “daily drink” – sipped throughout the day – detoxing the body and organs, while revving up the metabolism.

This tea has become a godsend to me, a small ritual I put into practice 6 months ago, that I have come to love, not only for its flavor but for its energizing and cleansing qualities.

How to make Turmeric Tea

To make the tea, place all the seeds and roots in a french press, and pour boiling water over the top.

Let seep 5-10 minutes before plunging.

If you don’t have a french press, no worries, just place all the ingredients in a pot of simmering water. Strain into a mug as you drink it.

Refill the pot or french press as much as you like that day, simply reusing the same tea bag, seeds, roots.

Or, if bringing it to work, make this in the morning and place in a thermos to keep it warm. Sip throughout the day.

The healing tradition of Ayurveda teaches that health and well-being depends upon our ability to digest everything we take in from the environment. This includes not only tangible substances like food and drink, but also our experiences, emotions, and the impressions we take in via our sensory portals, namely our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin.” Sheila Patal MD

If you can’t find fresh turmeric, some ground turmeric works fine too. Add it to taste.

Another way to incorporate fresh turmeric into your daily diet is to juice it, like in this  Turmeric Tonic.

“In Ayurveda, a healthy digestive system is seen as a cornerstone of well-being,” says Dr. Kshirsagar, who encourages the practice of drinking hot water and this hot tea throughout the day, in order to increase our digestive “fire,” and help keep it running efficiently.”

  8. Excellent recipe – thank you for sharing!! Is it better to grind the seeds before adding to the drink of can we just leave them whole?

  13. Very glad I found this site on how to live a healthy life. Pls answer these questions as am trying your recipe straightaway. 1) Can I add a pinch of black caraway powder into the combination ? 2) Is there any side effect on the liver ? 3) Can continuous use of this have any side effect? 4) I have a very flabby stomach, can this tea have a good effect in reducing the flab? If not, what do I use. Thanks very much for sharing this knowledge

    1. Yes, of course add black pepper. No side effects that I know of. This, combined with a healthy active lifestyle will help.

      1. I tried these detox drinks and works perfectly. It helps me to feel better and looks better. I also recommend everyone to try these recipes at least one time.

        Thanks for sharing these recipes.

  14. Just tried it today and it is absolutely soul enriching! Amazing recipe and yes, turmeric addition is a very clever idea. I would suggest fresh turmeric because it provides a beautiful flavour. I have already recommended it to my family and work colleagues and we’re going to make this a daily habit. Thank you for sharing your knowledge – this sounds like a healthy drink for those suffering from a serious illness as well. Thanks!!

  15. For the detox tea.. Can you make it and keep it in the fridge to warm up throughout the day? I work 14 hour shifts so I wanted to make a big pot of it today to have for the week. Thank you for your lovely recipes. XO

  16. Thank you for this recipe! I am wanting to detox, and was advised to start mild and work my way in to a stronger detox. I really appreciate this recipe as it is made with green tea and I happen to be a bit of a coffee addict (I HAVE to have my morning brew) even I only have 10-20 oz a day and all between 6 and 9am!
I do have a question though … have you tried cutting this recipe in half? My French Press is 1Q and I was curious about reducing the recipe before I try to myself.

  17. I absolutely love this blend, been using for a few months (specially cold days!) and couldn’t make me feel better – I don’t use fresh turmeric but use the powder and I mix it with any other caffeine-free teas, perfect to sip from at work!

  18. This tea recipe looks great for both hot and cold use. I drink a lot of herbal teas, but normally use the petal, leaf or dried root, like calendula, nettle and dandelion. So using the fresh root and dried spices will be interesting and different for me. I will be trying a caffeine-free version, as caffeine (even green tea) makes me feel irritable. On a different note, I didn’t know coffee plungers were called French Presses – had to look that one up on Google 🙂

  19. Hello Sylvia!

I love your sight! The turmeric Detox soup base is awesome! I have shared with a few people at work and they Love it too!!! 🙂

I’d like to know how to make this tea if I don’t have a French press?

That seems to be pretty important.

Thank you and please don’t stop! 🙂

    Yvonne
