This Turmeric Tea is a blend of green tea, turmeric root, ginger root fennel seeds, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, and lemon juice. It’s intended to be sipped throughout the day – assisting the body and organs to flush out toxins while revving up the metabolism.
It was inspired by an Ayurvedic detox tea in Dr. Suhas Kshirsagar’s book called The Hot Belly Diet – A 30-day plan to reset your metabolism and restore your body’s natural balance to heal itself.
If you are going caffeine-free, you can use an herbal tea (like tulsi, chamomile, mint or ginger) instead of green tea. Sometimes I will use yerba matte, white tea or black tea instead of green tea, and other whole spices ( like a cinnamon stick, whole clove, cardamom) just to mix it up a bit.
Please use this and adapt it to your taste.
Ingredients in Ayurvedic Turmeric Tea
- Turmeric Root – I love using fresh sliced turmeric root, but feel free to use a little ground to taste.
- Ginger root- Fresh ginger gain is nice, but feel free to add ground ginger.
- Fennel Seeds –optional but good for metabolism.
- Cumin Seeds– optional but good for metabolism.
- Coriander Seeds–optional but good for metabolism.
- Green tea- feel free to sub chamomile, tulsi, mint, or yerba.
- Lemon- a fresh squeeze of lemon, amplifies green tea’s health benefits.
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda originates from India, over 3000 years ago, and is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems, based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Its primary function is to restore or maintain balance within the body, not fight disease.

I wholeheartedly believe in the healing power of plants, and how wonderfully they can assist our bodies in healing themselves. Healing foods don’t have to be flavorless and boring, they can be vibrant and delicious, too.
Over the next few weeks I will share a few of these recipes here. Or sign up for the weekly email and as a free gift you’ll get my Clean-Eating Guide.
Part of the Clean Eating Guide is this “daily drink” – sipped throughout the day – detoxing the body and organs, while revving up the metabolism.
This tea has become a godsend to me, a small ritual I put into practice 6 months ago, that I have come to love, not only for its flavor but for its energizing and cleansing qualities.
How to make Turmeric Tea
To make the tea, place all the seeds and roots in a french press, and pour boiling water over the top.
Let seep 5-10 minutes before plunging.
If you don’t have a french press, no worries, just place all the ingredients in a pot of simmering water. Strain into a mug as you drink it.
Refill the pot or french press as much as you like that day, simply reusing the same tea bag, seeds, roots.
Or, if bringing it to work, make this in the morning and place in a thermos to keep it warm. Sip throughout the day.
“The healing tradition of Ayurveda teaches that health and well-being depends upon our ability to digest everything we take in from the environment. This includes not only tangible substances like food and drink, but also our experiences, emotions, and the impressions we take in via our sensory portals, namely our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin.” Sheila Patal MD
If you can’t find fresh turmeric, some ground turmeric works fine too. Add it to taste.
Sending you love and light this brand new year!
Let me know what you think of this in the comments below.
xoxo

Hi,Is this tea good for acne?
I’m not sure, but I don’t think it could hurt?
So glad I found this! it looks amazing, and I’m going shopping tomorrow, so I’ll pick up some fresh turmeric, I have everything else. I think it’s just what my tummy and my system needs right about now. thank you!
You are so welcome…enjoy the tea…its very soothing and healing, and nice gift to the body.
Hi Sylvia, I came across your website searching for ayurvedic tea, and absolutely love your recipes and your style!
Can’t wait to try this tea!
I also love the simple white mugs in this post. Do you sell them via bowlandpitcher.com?
All my best,
Ksenia
Oh Im so happy you found us! I think I got them at World market…but a while ago!
I really want to try this. My fear is that my body will have a strong odor to it with all of these fragrant ingredients. Has anyone had that type of negative experience?
No! haven’t noticed that at all!!
I really dint understand drink the tea in the morning or also during the day to.? And are you only eat veggies and fruits or what about meats?
Hi Wendy, if following the Ayurvedic method of detoxing, it is suggested you drink it throughout the day, to flush out toxins. I don’t remake the tea, I just make it once, and just keep refilling with hot water.
What if your on psy meds or blood pressure or blood thinner even diabetic meds that control your sugar an others that we must keep all levels stable ever day or its bad news an now many have heard the effect of spices an herbs on how it will effect are medication what about this?
My advise is ask your doctor. I don’t know how they would affect your medication. My guess, they wouldn’t affect too much, but I honestly don’t know for sure. The spices are ones you might already normally consume on a regular basis, along with ginger and turmeric, Im not sure… and green tea seems fairly harmless. But you be the judge. 😉
I made this today as written, 2 quarts. I added a packet of stevia to each quart. If I squeeze half a lemon into this in the morning can it replace my lemon water? I think so. My plan is to just drink a couple of cups a day for its health benefits.
I meant to add “what do you think?” ?
“
I think that sounds great!
thank so considerablya lot for your internet site it aids a great deal
for 2 quarts of tea …..am I supposed to use all those tea bags or just 2 of one tea bag?
Just 1-2 tea bags.
Thank you for sharing your valuable informations …Its really amazing website..The posts are awesome..Keep posting such articles ..Thank You
Isn’t Turmeric fat soluble? I thought it had to be taken with a fat to benefit from the curcumin.
Yes, but what I’ve also read is that Hot water significantly increases Turmeric’s solubility …in some cases up to 12 times.
Will adding honey alter the effectiveness of the tea? How about agave nectar? I have drank at least a quart of tea for three days with very satisfying results.
Not all all. Just use moderately. 😉
Just couldn’t wait until I could buy some ginger, so I used lemon ginger tulsi tea and added some peppercorns for a bit more heat. Then my mind/body suggested a bit of fenugreek and a slice of fresh lemon. yum!
I’ll try the official version tomorrow after shopping,
I like your version!
Thank you so much for this recipe. I’m not doing a detox but thought it looked interesting (and your pictures so compelling) so I tried it. I added some honey. It is delicious. Curbs my appetite too. I drank it warm and then chilled. Great both ways. Just feels good going down. Thanks again!!!
Hi,
Great that we are experimenting, just as a precaution we should not heat honey.
Regards.

I am wondering if I can use coriander, cumin and fennel seeds in my Nutribullet when making a smoothie?
Im not sure! Give it a try?
Today is day one of trying out this tea. I love the recipe and hope to enjoy it. I started this tea because I am feeling all the named symptoms in my body and know that this is absolutely necessary for me. However, just wondering if I should just tea my first 3days without food to seriously detox my body or should I continue to eat but healthier options while I try this out? I am only wondering about this for the first couple of days to help the effectiveness of this detox.
Please suggest!
Hi Mo, thanks for the note and I hope you enjoy your tea. To answer your question, there are no “shoulds” here. You know your body best and what it needs. Listen to it and then decide. Personally, I have a hard time fasting. I know people do it with good results, and I’ve done it in the past, but it feels like punishment to me. Do what you feel is best for your body and spirit. All the best to you!!
Hey! This tea looks wonderful, but could you still do it with powders or does it have to be seeds?
You could try it with ground spices but go lighter, as it may taste stronger.
I’m new to all the fresh and certified spices. Where should I purchase the seeds such as coriander etc? Also in the ingredient list where you mention all the teas, ie, mint, yerba, green, ginger; are these all in the recipe and should they be the leaf tea or bags?
Thank you!
Whole spices are usually found at grocery stores in the bulk section or in the Ethnic sections. Asian markets also carry these, but if all else fails, you can order on line. Both leaf or bagged teas work.
This looks like a great recipe, thanks! I will be doing my 7th Ayurvedic cleanse this fall, will use this tea instead of a bagged tea. My French press isn’t very big. If I use the boil and strain method, should I use 2 quarts of water with this amount of ingredients?
Yes, that seems about right!
Hello. I am just starting this detox and am wondering what you do for smaller snacks throughout the day and also if it is necessary to have 2 quarts of the tea daily? Thank you.
Hi Emily,
So according to the Ayurvedic diet book, the author actually discourages snacking! I know, I was surprised by it myself. But I followed that as best I could….and when I did need something, I grabbed an apple or banana, or cut veggies ( cucumber, jicama , bell peppers) sprinkled with lime and chile powder. The tea really helps flush your system and actually helps you not snack as much….I’m not sure that much is “necessary” but after a while I really came to enjoy it.
My fiance decided we should start a detox session and I’m the one in charge to find delicious and healthy teas and recipes. I have a hard time saying no to sugar and to baguettes so that’s why I need to plan this carefully so I don’t jump off the wagon too soon. Thanks for sharing this recipe, I think I’ll also try your spicy lentil tahini wrap, it sounds amazing!
This sounds like an interesting recipe for a tea! Love it!
Definitely trying this out this week! I’ve just recently gotten into Ayuvedic remedies and found they’ve really been doing wonders. Also, I’m just generally a tea monster anyway so this is right up my alley 🙂
Hi, Really great effort. Everyone must read this article. Thanks for sharing.
Not indelicate at all!!! I’m actually very glad you asked…because I have had that same experience in the past too! Not fun. No, defiantly not a “laxative” tea. Green tea, is naturally a diuretic, but gentle on the system. Go for it…you will enjoy it.
