The top TEN benefits of drinking 16 ounces of celery juice every morning to activate the gut, release toxins and heal the body! #celeryjuice #celery #juice #detox #cleanse #juicing #celeryrecipes  Imagination is the highest form of research. ~Albert Einstein

While on our annual road trip to California, I discovered something really strange. All the grocery stores were totally OUT of organic celery! What is going on here I thought?!  Where is all the celery going? There is no celery because everyone is guzzling it,  a friend later informed me. What? Why?

And then, how the universe likes to work, I began noticing that everyone was posting and sharing celery juice on social media. Health and wellness podcasts kept talking about it, singing its praises.  Celery Juice just kept popping up on my radar, over and over, until well, of course, I had to try it myself to see what all the hubbub was about.

So I’m on week three of drinking 16 ounces (2 cups) of organic celery juice first thing in the morning and just wanted to share my experience in case you are curious about it too.

Like all things on the blog- I’m not here to tell you what to eat or drink.  This may not be for everyone. Consult your doctor or trust your intuition. You know your body and what you need. I just like to share things I stumble on in case something piques your interest.

Optimally, you want to get to the point where you can enjoy it straight, but there are no rules here.

Health Benefits of Celery Juice

There seems to be a lot of research and consensus about the healing benefits of celery – but as always, please do your own research or consult your doctor, and decide for yourself. You can always try it and see how you feel.

  1. Celery Juice contains powerful anti-oxidants and cancer-fighting compounds. Celery contains a flavonoid called apigenin, which has been shown to kill cancer cells. The polyacetylenes in celery interestingly contain chemo-protective compounds that help to reduce toxicity while boosting immunity and help slow the growth of mutated cells.
  2. Celery juice may help restore hydrochloric acid, which helps us digest things, especially protein, faster and more efficiently.   Celery juice is believed to replenish depleted levels of gastric mucus that is needed in the stomach lining to heal and prevent ulcers and acid reflux.
  3. Celery Juice lowers cholesterol. Celery contains a compound called  3-n-butylphthalide (BuPh) that has been reported to have lipid-lowering action, reducing the bad cholesterol (LDL) in our bloodstream.
  4. Celery Juice is a natural anti-inflammatory. It contains Polyacetylene which reduces chronic joint pain, gout, and rheumatoid arthritis. Not only does it soothe the body, but it is also believed to soothe the nerves, with calming and relaxing properties.
  5. Celery lowers blood pressure. Research shows that celery helps lower high blood pressure by acting as a smooth muscle relaxant, improving the flow of calcium and potassium in cells, allowing blood vessels to expand and contract with greater ease.
  6. Celery juice aids the Liver. Celery juice improves liver function by increasing the production of enzymes. Studies show that celery helps reduce fat build-up in the liver. The nutrients in celery protect the liver, and actually, help the liver produce enzymes that help flush fat and toxins out.
  7. Celery juice improves digestion by increasing circulation in the intestines, getting things going and moving. It’s good for constipation, bloating, puffiness and water retention, acting as a gentle, mild, natural laxative and diuretic.
  8. Celery Juice reduces glucose levels Research shows that compounds found in celery can help reduce glucose levels with no increase in insulin.
  9. Celery Juice is alkalizing. Celery is one of the most alkaline foods you can eat! Research suggests that an alkaline diet lengthens life and prevents chronic diseases.
  10. Celery juice is highly nutritious. Celery is loaded with essential minerals and vitamins such as folate, potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin K and vitamin C.  A cocktail for the skin. The luteolin in celery protects skin from the inside and prevents UV-induced damage. Some swear by celery’s skin healing properties, saying that it helped clear up skin conditions like psoriasis and acne.

Celery Juice Tips

  • Make enough for two days and store the extra in the fridge, letting it come to room temperature before drinking. Less clean up this way!
  • If celery juice tastes bitter or unappealing to you, feel free to add other veggies to the juicer, to dilute the flavor. Cucumber and apple are nice. Or a squeeze of lemon.
  • If you are new to juicing or celery juice, start off conservatively with celery juice, try ¼-½ cup, and see how your tummy feels, refrigerating the rest.

Celery Juice’s effect on me personally:

Just to be clear, I’m not advocating a big, outrageous juice cleanse here. I am more in the camp of bringing balance to the body in a gentle way by incorporating small changes and seeing how my body feels. Overall, I feel the celery juice has had positive effects, but I no longer juice with it every morning. I do enjoy it on occasion, though! I really love the taste!

  • After a period of two weeks of drinking celery juice in the morning, my digestion seems to have improved- I feel like my stomach digests things quicker and more efficiently.
  • I feel less bloated, and my stomach feels flatter which seems to last throughout the day.
  • My skin feels more hydrated and looks healthier overall.
  • I’m having less salt cravings and less sugar cravings. Perhaps the juice is feeding my good gut bacteria?
  • I feel good after I drink it- it feels nourishing, I feel healthy. I like how I feel- which makes me want to keep drinking it. I also enjoy the taste of it.
  • I feel like have more energy.
  • My joints feel less stiff and achy.

Best bet: just try it. It may or may not be for you. Read the comments below and see if anything resonates. People have experienced benefits from drinking this, but we are all different.

Celery Juice FAQ’S

1. Is Celery juice good for you?

Essentially, yes. Celery stalks, leaves, and celery seeds all offer nutritional benefits, but most importantly, celery contains two beneficial antioxidants: apigenin and luteolin. Research shows that apigenin and luteolin reduce inflammation and may help treat a range of inflammatory diseases.

2. When should you drink Celery Juice?

Drink it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach for optimal results. Wait 20-30 minutes before drinking anything else.

3. Is Celery a Superfood?

Yes, according to this article in  Pub Med: Celery, because of compounds such as caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, apigenin, luteolin, tannin, saponin, and kaempferol, has powerful antioxidant characteristics, to remove free radicals. It is clear that celery, with different compounds and diverse concentration, can have varied healing effects.” It turns out, even celery seeds are highly nutritious.

4. Can celery juice heal the gut?

According to Anthony Williams (The Medical Medium) in his book Liver Rescue“Celery Juice is one of the most powerful and healing juices we can drink. Just 16 ounces of fresh celery juice every morning on an empty stomach can transform your health and digestion in as little as one week.” He suggests drinking it straight and not adding anything to it for the maximum benefit.

5. How much Celery Juice should you drink?

Drink 16 ounces (about two cups, or a pint glass). If you feel you can’t tolerate two cups in the beginning,  start with 1 cup and gradually increase. Or perhaps if is not pleasant, it may not be what you need.

6. Does celery need to be organic?

It is preferable but not mandatory. If using non-organic celery, make sure to wash all the stock very well, to help rinse any lingering pesticides. Celery is on the list of veggies that are heavily treated with pesticides.

7. Why can’t we eat celery instead of juicing it?

You can. But, to get the full benefits that everyone is raving about, you’de have to eat the whole head (or bunch) of celery first thing in the morning. One whole head of celery ( 9-12 stalks) equals 16 ounces of juice when juiced.

I hope you love celery juice as much as I have!  If Celery Juice is calling you- just try it! See how you feel. If your body feels good after drinking it, then perhaps it will benefit you. If you feel any discomfort or no effect, perhaps it is not for you!

You’ll never know unless you try it and experience it for yourself. If it doesn’t interest you, it may not be right for you, or you just don’t need it.

We intuitively know what we need to feel our best!

Listen!

xoxo

  1. I started drinking celery juice about 3 weeks ago, the longer i drink it
my feet and hip bones are killing me.
I have an auto immune called Takayasu Artiritis.
plus planters facititis and dermititis on the bottom of my feet.
sometimes it makes my stomack feel sick so i go off it for a day.
are theswe symtems normal when the celery juice is working?

    1. Hi Kathryn, my advice is to listen to your body. If you feel the celery juice is causing you not to feel well, stop drinking it. I have never heard of this happening but trust your intuition. You know best.

    1. I was listening to Jay Shetty’s ON Purporsoe podcast with Anthony William (Medical Medium) as per him if you add anything to the celery juice you instantly kill it. You won’t benefit from it like you would from a pure celery juice. I do recommend listening to that episode because Anthony William gets candid with Jay Shetty.

  2. I use coconut water – which is also very health for you – when blending celery. I think the taste of coconut water adds a lot to the flavor…

  3. When you blend it can you just drink it like that without straining it? Would it be more beneficial to consume all of it?

  4. I have been drinking celery juice per Anthony’s Instruction in his book since May (over 3 months). I learned about it through the Food Revolution Network. I am doing it for cholesterol and blood pressure as well as future health. I do see a drop in my BP but I need to get a Well check up to verify any changes overall. I am feeling just great, I feel like this juice helps aid in digestion and acts as a daily cleanse.

I am one who doesn’t really like the taste but I am interested in my health improving. It’s absolutely worth a try! I juice the celery now but used to blend then strain it. Thank you for your article!

      1. From what I’ve read, you’de have to eat a whole head of celery (8-10 stalks?) to get the amount of juice needed to make a difference.

  5. I tried celery juice for one week and it cleared every single cystic acne bump that had overtaken my face. My gut also felt better immediately, eliminating the gassy feeling I usually wake up with. I am now a dedicated celery juice drinker.

  6. Thanks for sharing this Sylvie. I was skeptical but tried it anyway because a friend had good results with it. All I can say is wow! I’ve been drinking it for ten days straight and feel amazing. Digestion is WAY better, I feel more energy and someone told me my skin looked good. That has never happened before. Sold. Quick question, can you make it ahead? How long does it last?

  7. I’ve been drinking this for one week and already my digestion has improved. My stomach feels flatter. I dont care what science says – my body says to keep drinking it.

  8. My sister who’s had 2 operations on her same ankle over the last 20 years, it’s never really healed and been swollen with open sores where stitches used to be. She’s also obese so having all that weight on it causes it to never heal. This has been going on for the past 2 decades and she refuses to get any more surgeries. Well once day she tried celery juice and within a week her foot healed up and there’s no open wound where there once was for over 20 years. Celery juice was the only thing she changed in her diet so it’s the only thing that helped heal. It is a miracle juice.

    1. Thanks for sharing Mike. I keep getting people emailing me about all the things celery juice is doing for them… it sounds crazy but it seems to working for people!

  9. Have you heard of Just Celery? It is non gmo, organic, cold pressed celery that is in the form of a powder to just add with water to be drank 1st a.m. !

  10. This has really helped my digestion. I feel better on the days I drink this first thing in the morning!

  11. I came across your blog and wanted to thank you for motivating people to try it. I was diagnosed with gastritis and an ulcer in March 2019 (burning pain, nausea and bloating). The doctor gave me medicine and I was supposed to take it for a month but it made me feel worse so I stopped taking it after 2 weeks. 3 weeks of pain cleared in just 24 hrs after I drank a glass of celery juice (who knew!?). So for the naysayers it obviously works to heal. I’ve been drinking 16 oz every morning for 2 months now. My digestion improved greatly and so did my skin! It doesn’t look blotchy and no bumps. My sister tried it for 2 days juiced with beets and a green apple and a facial scab that wouldn’t heal for a month healed overnight. I ramped up my exercising and tapered my diet to expedite my internal healing also. My weight loss increased quicker also. Sometimes if there is nothing left to heal your body you just go to nature, it is Biblical also.

    1. I have similar symptoms. This has really inspired me. Let me try and see. Wondering if it can work better with cucmber as well.

  12. I love celery juice! I’m not certain of all the benefits, but like you said – I feel good when I drink it and that’s enough for me!

  13. I tried this for a week. I didn’t notice any difference aside from feeling more hydrated throughout the day. Tastes better cold. I don’t have a juicer, so I tried the blender method and ran it through a nut milk bag…it worked better than the juicers I have used in the past. I am happy to have a new method of juicing, but I probably won’t be a regular celery drinker.

  14. Calling BS on celery juice pseudoscience… by all means, drink it if you like it but there’s NO EVIDENCE for celery juice « detox » (because the liver doesn’t actually work that way!!)

    1. Personally, I trust the truth of my own body. My body knows what makes it feel good. I encourage others to listen to what their body tells them rather than taking anyone else’s word for it. And Bri- a negative comment and a one star rating based on something you haven’t tried personally is not helpful to anyone.

  15. I am SO grateful to you! First for the schwitzel (or whaterver the name). I will be 70 in a few months and about six months ago, I started having terrible pains in my guts. One time, it got so bad I had to call the urgency doctor. he found nothing wrong with me, just bloated he said, but, boy, did it hurt. I lived with it for a while till I found YOU. We say in France, touch wood! but I am feeling MUCH better. I just went on a little vacation by the ocean (Ile de Ré) and found your celery recipe. Everything you prone I know, I always tried to eat & live healthily, but your blog puts everything again in mind for me & makes it adjustable to my life. Be blessed, dear Lady, you have all my gratitude. Liliane from Strasbourg, France

    1. Thank you so much I appreciate you kind words. Im glad the Switchel helped your tummy feel better. give this a try and see what you think!
