A homemade tea for sore throat – originating from Morocco, with just three ingredients! Soothing, comforting and warming, you’ll want to drink this all winter long!
As unbelievable as this sounds, this Moroccan Sore Throat Tea is probably one of the best discoveries we had in Morocco. After spending a bone-chilling night in a desert camp in the middle of the Sahara, I got sick. By the time we made the long trip back to Marrakech, I was achy, feverish and had a terribly painful sore throat, and all I wanted to do was go home, but we had only just begun our journey.
To my surprise, the host where we were staying, graciously brought up a big tea-pot full of this fragrant Lemon Ginger Tea – or what I like to call Moroccan Sore Throat Tea.
And that is pretty much what I drank for the next 3 days. It totally saved me and was an absolute godsend! She told me how this natural remedy had been part of their culture for hundreds of years. So soothing and healing! When we got back home to the snow and cold we kept drinking it throughout the winter, warming and comforting.
It got back into my rotation a few weeks ago when I caught another cold. And even though I’m over the cold now, I still find myself making a cup of this each night. It’s very addicting. A good healthy addiction. 😉
Not only is this the best tea for sore throat, it’s so simple and easy, requiring only 3 ingredients -ground ginger, honey and lemon juice.
You can also use fresh ginger that has simmered in hot water, but in Morocco, to my surprise, they always used ground ginger. And for some reason, now I like the ground ginger better. It has an extra peppery bite which for some strange reason, feels good on a sore throat.
Honey coats the throat and is very soothing and also acts as a natural antibiotic. It is actually one of the oldest known antibiotics, going all the way back to ancient Egyptians, who frequently used honey as a natural antibiotic and skin protectant. For the most nutrients, try to use raw honey whenever possible.
Other home remedies for sore throat include fresh sage tea (submerging fresh sage leaves in boiling water….and of course, good old-fashioned, gargling with salt water.
For a warming, soothing tea for sore throat or colds, give this Sore Throat Tea a try!
And if you are wanting something a little stronger….there is always this Maple Ginger Hot Toddy. 😉 Not only does it soothe, it will knock you out. 😉
And lastly, this Balinese Jamu Juice, served hot, is one of my favorites when I have a cold, made with fresh turmeric root.
Feel better soon and let me know what you think…

Description
Sore Throat Tea! A homemade tea for sore throat- originating from Morocco, with just three ingredients- lemon, ginger and honey. This healthy, soothing tea remedy is so warming and comforting, you’ll want to drink it all winter long!
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups boiling water
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger ( or feel free to use fresh-see notes)
- 1–2 teaspoons honey
- squeeze lemon
Instructions
Notes
In the past I’ve always made something similar with fresh ginger slices in the tea. But in Morocco they always used dry ground ginger (the dry spice). I grew to like it better their way with dry ground ginger. But feel free to experiment! Fresh ginger root, cut into slices, or cut up really small, with both work too.

Am really grateful and thankful
I had the most amazing lemon ginger tonic at a Whole Foods in CA…came back to my home store in MN and they’ve never heard of it so I’ve been on the hunt since lol.
When you say squeeze of lemon…can you give me a little bit more direction? Is that juice of 1/2 lemon? Quarter of a lemon? Just looking for a starting point.
Thank you!
Squeeze to taste. All lemons are different sizes, so start with a little squeeze, add more to taste.
Felt a cold sneaking up on me and made this. Now I have one less problem to deal with, so thank you very much.
I thought you add honey later when the ginger and water is completely boiled. Do we have to put honey while boiling the water?
After is fine.
So, so amazing. I normally have tea with fresh ginger, lemon, honey etc when I have a bad throat but after seeing your recipe, tried the dry ginger this time. Loving the hit to your throat and when it goes down, makes you feel like aaahhhhhh…lol. you know what I mean?? 😁 Thank you so very much!!!
Totally know what you mean! Glad you liked it!
Delicious! I used fresh ginger and it worked well also. Cheers.
That’s the best, really helps!
Has a nice spicey note to it. Used it several times while dealing with Strep Throat….was a Godsend!
Yay, so happy you liked it!
IT works! But 2 tablespoons of honey, not 2 teaspoons.
I was looking for a tea that would help my sore throat today, I came across your story and recipe and I was intrigued! Everything was easy and on hand, and wow that peppery bite from the ground Ginger is amazing! Just made my first cup, I will keep you posted! Thanks
Great to hear Anne and thanks for the rating!
I actually just threw this together because my throat hurts so bad and know I need fluids but cold water doesn’t feel as soothing. I used my ginger paste that I use when I stir fry and it was great. And so so soothing. I’ve been doing honey and lemon and don’t know why I didn’t think to try ginger!! My throat feels better now than it has in days.
Love the “zing” of the ground ginger. Delicious!
Love the “zing” often ground ginger. Delicious!
I received this recipe a few days ago in the latest newsletter of Feasting at Home. Little did I know it would come in so handy! I have a terribly sore throat and it has been very soothing and tasty at the same time!
I hope you feel better!
I had made a note of this recipe for future use and, wouldn’t you know it, I came down with a cold this week!. This tea is all that you said it is! Thanks!
I hope you feel better!
Thank You!! I too have always made this with fresh ginger, but using powdered ginger sounds even better and easier to adjust the strength. With sore throat season coming, this will be a must have for a healthy winter.
Sylvia is right … this tea can become a healthy addiction. I find that sipping a cup after dinner drains all the stress of the day away. Delicious.
LOVE this- thanks!
Would this work with turmeric as well as ginger?
So feel free to use turmeric, of course, but I like the “bite” of the ginger and how it feels on my throat when sore. 🙂
Just made this as both of us have sore throats today – it is delicious. Warming and soothing at the same time. Thank you for another excellent recipe.
So glad you found it soothing!
This is so simple and so good. I usually use fresh ginger for this kinda thing but I agree that the ground ginger is (surprisingly) better (and simpler to make). Thanks!
So glad you liked it!
I first was drawn to and made this tea to help combat an allergy cough. But now I find I’m making it as a soul-soother each morning. It is warming and delicious and brings me a simple comfort which I love and appreciate. Even the act of making it is centering. Thanks so very much for sharing!
That is the perfect way to describe this-and I use it this way too! As a soul soother. LOVE IT.
Hi Sylvia,
Love the sound of that sore throat Moroccan tea. My question is how do you ground fresh ginger? Can you just chop it up small?
Thanks,
Frannie.
Hi Frannie, use ground ginger ( the dry spice kind). 😉
Thanks for this recipe for ginger tea. I know ginger has some therapeutic value, but not sure the best way to take advantage of it.
Thank you Sylvia for sharing this recipe. I will be drinking this every day for the rest of my life!
Ahaha! You are funny and Im doing the same!
would this work with fresh ginger?
Absolutely Anne, and that’s what I used to do before Morocco.;)
Sylvia, you could not have posted this at a better time! I’ve had a terrible cold for the past week and this is one of the few things that helped soothe my aching throat. I tried it with both fresh and ground ginger and definitely preferred the ground. The spiciness does surprisingly feel quite good on a sore throat. I also used local raw honey and meyer lemons and wow was it helpful. Thank you again!
Hi Melanie, I’m so glad it’s soothing your throat. I really like this one too, with the ground ginger.
