Celery Juice Recipe and Benefits! The top TEN benefits of drinking 16 ounces of celery juice every morning to activate the gut, release toxins and heal the body! #celeryjuice #celery #juice #detox #cleanse #juicing #celeryrecipes  Imagination is the highest form of research. ~Albert Einstein

While on our annual road trip to California, I discovered something really strange. All the grocery stores were totally OUT of organic celery! What is going on here I thought?!  Where is all the celery going? There is no celery because everyone is guzzling it,  a friend later informed me. What? Why?

And then, how the universe likes to work, I began noticing that everyone was posting and sharing celery juice on social media. Health and wellness podcasts kept talking about it, singing its praises.  Celery Juice just kept popping up on my radar, over and over, until well, of course, I had to try it myself to see what all the hubbub was about.

So I’m on week three of drinking 16 ounces (2 cups) of organic celery juice first thing in the morning and just wanted to share my experience in case you are curious about it too.

Like all things on the blog- I’m not here to tell you what to eat or drink.  This may not be for everyone. Consult your doctor or trust your intuition. You know your body and what you need. I just like to share things I stumble on in case something piques your interest.

Health Benefits of Celery Juice

There seems to be a lot of research and consensus about the healing benefits of celery – but as always, please do your own research or consult your doctor, and decide for yourself. You can always try it and see how you feel.

  1. Celery Juice contains powerful anti-oxidants and cancer-fighting compounds. Celery contains a flavonoid called apigenin, which has been shown to kill cancer cells. The polyacetylenes in celery interestingly contain chemo-protective compounds that help to reduce toxicity while boosting immunity and help slow the growth of mutated cells.
  2. Celery juice may help restore hydrochloric acid, which helps us digest things, especially protein, faster and more efficiently.   Celery juice is believed to replenish depleted levels of gastric mucus that is needed in the stomach lining to heal and prevent ulcers and acid reflux.
  3. Celery Juice lowers cholesterol. Celery contains a compound called  3-n-butylphthalide (BuPh) that has been reported to have lipid-lowering action, reducing the bad cholesterol (LDL) in our bloodstream.
  4. Celery Juice is a natural anti-inflammatory. It contains Polyacetylene which reduces chronic joint pain, gout, and rheumatoid arthritis. Not only does it soothe the body, but it is also believed to soothe the nerves, with calming and relaxing properties.
  5. Celery lowers blood pressure. Research shows that celery helps lower high blood pressure by acting as a smooth muscle relaxant, improving the flow of calcium and potassium in cells, allowing blood vessels to expand and contract with greater ease.
  6. Celery juice aids the Liver. Celery juice improves liver function by increasing the production of enzymes. Studies show that celery helps reduce fat build-up in the liver. The nutrients in celery protect the liver, and actually, help the liver produce enzymes that help flush fat and toxins out.
  7. Celery juice improves digestion by increasing circulation in the intestines, getting things going and moving. It’s good for constipation, bloating, puffiness and water retention, acting as a gentle, mild, natural laxative and diuretic.
  8. Celery Juice reduces glucose levels Research shows that compounds found in celery can help reduce glucose levels with no increase in insulin.
  9. Celery Juice is alkalizing. Celery is one of the most alkaline foods you can eat! Research suggests that an alkaline diet lengthens life and prevents chronic diseases.
  10. Celery juice is highly nutritious. Celery is loaded with essential minerals and vitamins such as folate, potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin K and vitamin C.  A cocktail for the skin. The luteolin in celery protects skin from the inside and prevents UV-induced damage. Some swear by celery’s skin healing properties, saying that it helped clear up skin conditions like psoriasis and acne.

Celery Juice Tips

  • Make enough for two days and store the extra in the fridge, letting it come to room temperature before drinking. Less clean up this way!
  • If celery juice tastes bitter or unappealing to you, feel free to add other veggies to the juicer, to dilute the flavor. Cucumber and apple are nice. Or a squeeze of lemon.
  • If you are new to juicing or celery juice, start off conservatively with celery juice, try ¼-½ cup, and see how your tummy feels, refrigerating the rest.

Celery Juice’s effect on me personally:

Just to be clear, I’m not advocating a big, outrageous juice cleanse here. I am more in the camp of bringing balance to the body in a gentle way by incorporating small changes and seeing how my body feels. Overall, I feel the celery juice has had positive effects, but I no longer juice with it every morning. I do enjoy it on occasion, though! I really love the taste!

  • After a period of two weeks of drinking celery juice in the morning, my digestion seems to have improved- I feel like my stomach digests things quicker and more efficiently.
  • I feel less bloated, and my stomach feels flatter which seems to last throughout the day.
  • My skin feels more hydrated and looks healthier overall.
  • I’m having less salt cravings and less sugar cravings. Perhaps the juice is feeding my good gut bacteria?
  • I feel good after I drink it- it feels nourishing, I feel healthy. I like how I feel- which makes me want to keep drinking it. I also enjoy the taste of it.
  • I feel like have more energy.
  • My joints feel less stiff and achy.

Best bet: just try it. It may or may not be for you. Read the comments below and see if anything resonates. People have experienced benefits from drinking this, but we are all different.

Celery Juice FAQ’S

1. Is Celery juice good for you?

Essentially, yes. Celery stalks, leaves, and celery seeds all offer nutritional benefits, but most importantly, celery contains two beneficial antioxidants: apigenin and luteolin. Research shows that apigenin and luteolin reduce inflammation and may help treat a range of inflammatory diseases.

2. When should you drink Celery Juice?

Drink it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach for optimal results. Wait 20-30 minutes before drinking anything else.

3. Is Celery a Superfood?

Yes, according to this article in  Pub Med: Celery, because of compounds such as caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, apigenin, luteolin, tannin, saponin, and kaempferol, has powerful antioxidant characteristics, to remove free radicals. It is clear that celery, with different compounds and diverse concentration, can have varied healing effects.” It turns out, even celery seeds are highly nutritious.

4. Can celery juice heal the gut?

According to Anthony Williams (The Medical Medium) in his book Liver Rescue“Celery Juice is one of the most powerful and healing juices we can drink. Just 16 ounces of fresh celery juice every morning on an empty stomach can transform your health and digestion in as little as one week.” He suggests drinking it straight and not adding anything to it for the maximum benefit.

5. How much Celery Juice should you drink?

Drink 16 ounces (about two cups, or a pint glass). If you feel you can’t tolerate two cups in the beginning,  start with 1 cup and gradually increase. Or perhaps if is not pleasant, it may not be what you need.

6. Does celery need to be organic?

It is preferable but not mandatory. If using non-organic celery, make sure to wash all the stock very well, to help rinse any lingering pesticides. Celery is on the list of veggies that are heavily treated with pesticides.

7. Why can’t we eat celery instead of juicing it?

You can. But, to get the full benefits that everyone is raving about, you’de have to eat the whole head (or bunch) of celery first thing in the morning. One whole head of celery ( 9-12 stalks) equals 16 ounces of juice when juiced.

I hope you love celery juice as much as I have!  If Celery Juice is calling you- just try it! See how you feel. If your body feels good after drinking it, then perhaps it will benefit you. If you feel any discomfort or no effect, perhaps it is not for you!

You’ll never know unless you try it and experience it for yourself. If it doesn’t interest you, it may not be right for you, or you just don’t need it.

We intuitively know what we need to feel our best!

Listen!

xoxo

  1. I have been drinking one bunch of celery on an empty stomach first thing in the morning for one week, and my blood pressure has reduced UNBELIEVABLY ! Im going to continue as I have low hydrochoric acid and its helps regarding bloating and digestion too. Who knew? !!

  2. I’m planning to try recipe blender style tomorrow and wondering is there any reason why one shouldn’t or wouldn’t want to drink in the whole blended celery rather than run it through a nut bag to get the juice?

    1. To get the quantity of juice you need, you’d have to consume the whole head of celery.

    2. You put it through the nut bag to strain it, so that you are not consuming all the fibre which is harder to digest. I’d think about it like- if you consume it all it’s a food where as straining it you’re only consuming liquid and nutrients. 🙂

    1. Probably not, but it may help you digest other foods more efficiently?

  3. Great article.

Just wanted to ask is there less calories if you juice instead of blending. Which would you recommend?

  4. You may not be getting all the fiber out of the juice. Be sure to strain it! The exact thing happened to me when I tried to make it without a juicer.

    1. There are links all throughout the post referring to research. Click on them and they will take you there. 😉

  5. In the nutrition facts, is that one glass or one stalk? could you clarify the serving? Thank you!

  6. Thanks for sharing! Choosing the right kind of water filter is important. It is good for the health and a good way to conserve water. Also, having a water filtration machine at home can help improve the water quality. I recommend Puronics water treatment and filtration systems.

  7. hi i ended up eating broccoli and eggs first thing instead of the celery juice should i wait until the next day to drink it on an empty stomach

  8. Thanks for all of the great tips! I just got a juicer so I am excited about using it for celery juice. One thing I have noticed in a good deal of the juicing advice on other blogs as well as this one is that organic is recommended. This implies that organic produce doesn’t have any pesticides which, in fact, it does. I think in order for people to make the best choices for themselves they need to be given the facts from both sides. Just a thought. Thanks again for your tips!

  9. I was looking into what I can do in a natural and healthy way to heal my liver. I came across your blog and is so thankful. I’m heading to whole foods in the morning to pick up a whole bunch! Take care 🙂

  10. i cook my celery in the pressue cooker but never throw away the water.
it goes into the fridge and i drink a large glass of it on an empty stomach.

  11. No, that is not normal. Maybe it isn’t for you? Please listen to your body always and perhaps consult your physician.

  12. I am on Day 3 of celery juicing. I drink 8 ounces/day instead of 16 ounces. The reason is my husband drinks it with me also so we split it. Does anyone have recommendations to a masticating juicer for celery juicing. I currently have the Breville centrigual juicer.

I feel great starting my day out with celery juice. I feel like I have done a body cleanse because I feel lighter and feel great inside, I have more clarity/focus and more energy and sleep better at night. Not sure if this is all in my head, but this is what I noticed 3 days in.

    1. I noticed that as well! Glad it is helping. 🙂 Not sure about the juicer, I am after a new one too. If you find one you like will you let me know?

      1. Great article. I bought the Aicok slow juicer (model AMR519) after reading this piece and searching Amazon. It’s the number 1 in juicers and a real breeze with celery. It cleans super easy too. I cut the celery into 5cm pieces per the instructions and filled a 1.5 L empty water bottle cos I don’t see myself juicing every morning. I’ld like to add ginger next time. Looking forward to real results.

      2. Hi, I have an Omega, easy peasy clean up! Tks fornthebarticle, can’t wait tobtry. Our son told me about this several yrs back, I’m ready to begin! 🙂

      3. I love ORFELD. I bought it on Amazon used for $89. It’s easy to work with and really simple to clean. It’s cute too!!

      4. I’ve had two friends recommend using the Breville Fountain Plus JE98XL. I bought one yesterday at bed bath & beyond, $149.99, they did take my 20% off coupon so it brought it down to $120. I juiced a whole head of celery this morning got 20 oz, I’ll cut that down tomorrow to 16 oz. It’s really easy to use, and clean up is just like anything else, you have to wash it and dry it. Some pieces can be put top shelf in a dishwasher. I hope this helps.

  13. Hi…

Great article… will start also drinking celery juice for my health.. but i wonder, is it okay if i add collagen powder into it?

  14. Very interesting article, but I can’t stand the smell or taste of celery! Can I add anything to it ( I’ve never juiced before so don’t have a clue!) to make it more palatable? 🤞🤞🤞🤞

    1. IT TASTES REALLY DELICIOUS BUT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU HAVE HAD IN YOUR MOUTH BEFORE YOU DRINK IT, LIKE OTHER THINGS DO.

    2. Hello! I used to add seawater and a few drops of lemon. The taste and flavour is better than alone. Probe it. Enjoy the wellness!!!

  15. I LOVE the Recipes and other information.

    I WOULD LOVE. LOVE💕.
