Description
This Sloppy Joe recipe features lean ground meat (of your choice) in a tangy homemade BBQ sauce, served over a toasted bun. It’s a comforting classic that can be made in 35 minutes. It’s gluten-free and adaptable. It makes 4 sandwiches.
Ingredients

- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 onion, diced
- 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped small
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- half of a jalapeño (optional), diced
- 1 pound lean ground beef (or ground turkey, ground lamb, ground bison, or veggie meat)
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Sloppy Joe Sauce
- 3/4 cup tomato puree
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 2 teaspoons dijon mustard
- 3 tablespoons maple syrup, or brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon molasses
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 4 toasted buns (hamburger buns, Brioche buns, sourdough buns or gluten-free buns)
Optional toppings: pickles, pepper jack cheese, sharp cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, roasted bell peppers, hatch chilies, pickled onions, avocado slices, coleslaw
Instructions
- In a large skillet, saute onion, green pepper, garlic and jalapeno in olive oil over medium heat until tender for 5 minutes.
- Add in the ground beef, breaking it apart. Add chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper, and stir, continuing to break up the meat and mix in the spices. Let cook for five more minutes, or until cooked through.
- In a small bowl, mix together tomato sauce, tomato paste, dijon mustard, maple syrup, Worcestershire sauce, molasses, and vinegar. Add to the meat mixture, mixing it all together.
- Let simmer over low heat for 10 minutes until sauce has thickened. Adjust salt and sweetness to taste.
- Serve over a toasted bun with your choice of toppings.
Notes
Store leftovers in a sealed airtight container in the fridge for 3 days. To reheat, warm gently in a pan on the stove.
Freeze sloppy joe filling for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight before reheating. This would make a great freezer meal.
