Introducing the Bramble Cocktail featuring fresh muddled blackberries, gin, lemon juice and sparkling water – a refreshing summer drink that can be batch-made for gatherings!

The bramble cocktail is a refreshing summer drink that combines fresh muddled blackberries, gin, lemon juice and sparkling water.

A spin-off of the classic drink called the Bramble Cocktail, first created in London in the ’80s featuring a blackberry liqueur called Crème de Mûre, this version substitutes a handful of fresh juicy ripe summer blackberries. It’s light and refreshing and perfect for summer gatherings, and the best part, it can be sweetened to taste.

This could easily be made into a very refreshing “mocktail”, sans alcohol –becoming  Sparkling Blackberry Lemonade, without the gin  by adding muddled blackberries into lemonade and adding a bit of sparkling water or ginger ale. The color is beautiful.

Bramble Cocktail Ingredients

  • Fresh blackberries
  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Dry Gin (or sub-vodka)
  • Optional: Blackberry Liqueur
  • Sweetener of choice:  simple syrup, honey simple syrup, maple or agave
  • Sparkling water ( or ginger ale)
  • Garnish with fresh blackberries and lemon zest

How to Make a Bramble Cocktail

  1. Fill a glass with ice.
  2. Muddle ripe juicy blackberries with fresh lemon juice in a shaker. Fill with ice.
  3. Add gin, optional Blackberry liqueur, and sweetener of choice. Shake well.
  4. Strain.  I had to use a fine-mesh strainer, because the built-in strainer in the shaker did not strain all the seeds.
  5. Pour over ice and top with sparkling water, garnish with a twist of lemon and a fresh blackberry.

Yes, it’s perfect for large gatherings! See the recipe notes. Make a big batch ahead, and store it in the fridge for up to 2 days. Possibly more, but it never seems to last that long. 😉

Description

The bramble cocktail is a refreshing summer drink that combines fresh muddled blackberries, gin, lemon juice and sparkling water.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/2 cup fresh blackberries
  • 1 1/2 ounces of fresh lemon juice
  • 2ounces Dry Gin (or sub vodka)
  • 1ounce Blackberry Liquor (optional)
  • 1ounce simple syrup, honey simple syrup, maple or agave
  • Sparkling water ( or try Ginger Ale!)
  • Garnish with fresh blackberries, lemon twist and mint

Instructions

  1. Fill a glass with ice.
  2. Muddle ripe juicy blackberries with fresh lemon juice in a shaker. Fill with ice.
  3. Add gin, optional Blackberry liqueur, and sweetener of choice. Shake well.
  4. Strain.  I had to use a fine-mesh strainer, because the built-in strainer in the shaker did not strain the seeds.
  5. Pour over ice and top with sparkling water with a twist of lemon and top with a blackberry.

Notes

If not adding the Blackberry Liqueur, you may need to add more sweetener, so sweeten to taste.

You could also make a big batch of this, multiplying the recipe to your desired amount. Place everything (except the soda) in a large mason jar and store in the fridge for up to 2 days. When ready to serve, strain, add the sparkling water to taste, and garnish with a few blackberries, lemon slices, and mint.

Ginger ale is also nice here instead of sparkling water.

  1. I made this with our own blackberries, added a pinch of sugar, mint, fresh lemon and muddled it. Didn’t have gin, subbed vodka and didn’t use a blackberry liquor. Used club soda. Was very refreshing! Would definitely make again!!!

  2. Just wanted to say “thank you “
Your writing is wonderful to read! I look forward to your recipes , I’ve changed the way I look at food
    Have a wonderful weekend

  3. This sounds delicious! I’m planning on making a batch of this for a small party! How far in advance do you think I could make this cocktail in a large pitcher or drink dispenser? Saving the soda water until time of serving obviously! Thank you!

    1. I haven’t tested this but my guess is it would fine 2-3 days before and probably even tastier! I added some recipe notes.

  4. This is absolutely amazing! Your cocktails are dangerous. They taste so good it’s easy to down them quickly. We used ginger ale, but I could see it being just as tasty with just soda.

      1. They are indeed Finnish glassware! They are part of the Iitala Ultima Thule collection. Definitely do not sell those for 0.25 in a garage sale 😉 We enjoy these as well and they are absolutely perfect for all occasions!! I came across your drink recipe & it looks like I will be making it in these same glasses =)

  5. This is a stunningly beautiful drink and a perfect way to utilize extra blackberries.. or the perfect reason to puchase some blackberries!! I love the touch of lemon zest- a superb cocktail to kick off the weekend right! Thanks for sharing ♡

  6. Wow!! This looks like the perfect summer drink! I’ll have to treat myself to this one evening 🙂
