This festive Negroni tastes deliciously herby, just slightly bitter but beautifully balanced out with the citrus, hints of sweetness and a whisper of juniper from the gin. Blood oranges give it a more festive presentation, but navel oranges also worked fine!

Ingredeints in a Negroni

  • Gin – I love an herbal gin – The Botanist Brand, Tanqueray,  Sipsmith Gin, or Hendricks
  • Campari-  Carpano Antica works well in a classic negroni – or sub a  Cynar, Aperol or Cappelletti
  • Sweet Vermouth– use a red, sweet, Italian-style vermouth, I prefer small batch vermouths such as Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, Cinzano 1757 or Cinzano Rosso.
  • Fresh Orange or Blood orange– the classic version uses zest only. We add a slice and a squeeze of juice, do as you like.

How to make a Classic Negroni

Negronis are very forgiving and easy to make.

Simply mix equal parts of gin, Campari and Sweet vermouth ( typically 1-ounce of each) and stir over ice with orange peel. Prepare to melt.

We’ve taken the classic Negroni and added a squeeze of blood orange juice to give it a more festive holiday feel.

  1. My mom is not a big fan of gin and we want to make this as an aperitif for the turkey christmas dinner. What other type of spirit could I substitute (if any) ?

  2. love the blood orange “vibrancy” here, colorwise and even a little bit of healthy Vitamin C to offset the alcohol, at least that’s what I tell myself! Thank you for a wonderful cocktail recipe!

  3. I have never drink this juice before. With your help i hope i will able to prepare this myself. Hahahaha! I guess i will try!

  4. This is amazing – I found it recommended on bloglovin.

Hendricks is quite possibly my favourite gin and it tastes amazing. I need to get hold of some campari, as I have the sweet vermouth.

    Lovely recipe.
